Andriy Pavelko.
The European Court of Human Rights has issued a judgment fully upholding the complaint filed by Andriy Pavelko, the former President of the Ukrainian Association of Football and a member of UEFA’s Executive Committee, regarding his detention.
The European Court found that the actions of Ukrainian authorities in detaining Andriy Pavelko violated the European Convention on Human Rights, specifically §4 Article 5, which stipulates that anyone deprived of liberty by arrest or detention has the right to a prompt judicial review of the lawfulness of their detention and to immediate release if such detention is found unlawful.
The ECHR determined that Andriy Pavelko was denied this right.
Additionally, the ECHR ordered the responsible Ukrainian authorities to pay appropriate compensation.
As is widely known, the organizer behind Andriy Pavelko’s imprisonment was his competitor, Andriy Shevchenko, who took advantage of Pavelko’s unlawful detention to assume his position — a move widely condemned by Ukraine’s business community.
